MITN Chapter II

1. Now when the man Jesus was born as a baby in Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of Herod the king, astrologers from the East came to Jerusalem to inquire about Him. These astrologers, or “Magi” originated from a religious caste among the Persians who were devoted to divination (or the practice of the magic arts) and to the interpretation of dreams. They came from Southern Arabia, where they had long maintained a tradition of Israelite Messianic expectation that had survived in the region since the days of the Queen of Sheba; and this tradition survived alongside their practice of astrology.

2. When they came to Jerusalem, they began to ask around, “Where is He Who has been born King of the Jews? For we have charted His star in the East through our understanding of the zodiac and have come to worship Him.”

3. But when the news about these Arabic magicians got to Herod, it worried him greatly and, in fact, troubled all of Jerusalem with him.

4. So he called together all the people who were experts in the law, and in Messianic prophecy, and asked them where the Messiah was supposed to be born.

5. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” the learned men replied, “for this is what the prophet Micah has written:

6. ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not in any way the least among Judah’s rulers: for out of you will come a ruler who will be the Shepherd of my people Israel.’”

7. Then Herod called for a secret meeting with the Magi in an attempt to find out if what they knew from their astrological charts lined up with what the Scriptures had predicted.

8. But these magicians had no knowledge of the prophetic Scriptures, so he said to them, “Go to Bethlehem and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you locate him, report back to me so that I may go and worship Him.”

9. After they conferred with the king, they went on their way and could actually see the star ahead of them. It literally seemed to move, guiding them to Bethlehem until it appeared to stop over the place where the child was.

10. When they saw the star that they had anticipated for so long, they were absolutely overjoyed. Of all the signs and wonders that they had seen and performed, this was different…this was the most spectacular! And this was proof that the heavens really do declare the glory of God, as David had said, and that even those who were not of the seed of Abraham could see it, even without a knowledge of the Scriptures.

11. On entering the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary and instinctively bowed down and worshipped Him. While everyone else in Israel was oblivious, these Persian magicians were the very first to recognize and worship the King! Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, providing Him and His family with enough wealth to last a lifetime.

12. Then they were warned in a dream not to go back to see Herod and returned to their country by an alternate route.

13. After the wise men had gone, an angel from the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Hurry and take the child and his mother to Egypt! Stay there until I tell you to return, because Herod is looking for your child and wants to kill him.”

14. That very night, Joseph obediently got up and took his wife and baby boy to Egypt,

15. where they stayed until Herod died. So the prophecy came true, just as the Lord had promised and the prophet had said, “I called my son out of Egypt.”

16. When Herod became aware that the Magi had more or less tricked him, he was furious. He reacted by giving orders for his men to kill all the boys who lived in or near Bethlehem that were two years old and younger. He based his horrible plan on what he had learned from the Eastern magicians.

17. So another prophecy came true, just as the prophet Jeremiah had said:

18. “In Ramah a voice was heard crying and weeping loudly. Rachel was mourning for her children, and she was inconsolable because they were dead.”

19. Finally, after King Herod died, an angel from the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph while he was still in exile in Egypt.

20. The angel said, “Get up now and take the child and his mother back to Israel. The people who wanted to kill him are no threat to you now because they are dead.”

21. So Joseph obediently got up and left with them for Israel.

22. But when he heard that Herod's son Archelaus was now the ruler of Judea, he was afraid to go there. So the angel spoke to him in another dream and told him to go to Galilee.

23. And, as a result, they went to live there in the town of Nazareth. So yet another prophecy was fulfilled in this action, because the prophet had said, “He will be called a Nazarene.”

Matthew In The Now

Hey bloggers,

I've been saying for a while now that the time I spend creating the blog every day keeps me from authoring books, because it satisfies my need for expression with instant gratification. 2008 is the first year since the millennium that I haven't written anything, and it's because I'm doing this every day. So, since I don't want to give up the blog (I love it, and so it's not going anywhere), I've decided to make it work for me in the area of book writing.

I am (finally) writing Matthew In The Now, and as I finish each chapter, I'm going to post it here...sort of like a series. It won't be on here every day, because I probably won't be able to write a chapter a day. But the pressure of having to come up with a daily topic for the blog will actually be good for me, because it will force me to stay on task with MITN (I'm still planning on doing at least the whole New Testament, BTW).

I need your support on this...paraphrasing the Bible is a huge undertaking, but it's something I really believe that I'm supposed to do. Your feedback on this project will be appreciated.

OK, let's get started...

Matthew In The Now

Chapter 1

1. This is the genealogy, or natural family tree through His step-father, Joseph, of Jesus, the Christ…the Messiah, who was revealed and understood in the physical world as both the son of David, and the son of Abraham.

2. To begin with, Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

3. Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, (whose mother was Tamar); Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,

4. Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,

5. Salmon the father of Boaz, (whose mother was Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed, (whose mother was Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse,

6. and Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, (whose mother had been Uriah's wife),

7. Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,

8. Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah,

9. Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,

10. Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,

11. and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12. After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,

13. Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,

14. Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud,

15. Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,

16. and Jacob was the father of Joseph, who became the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus, who was and is called the Messiah.

17. And so it turns out that there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen generations from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen generations from the exile to the Messiah.

18. Now, this is how the physical birth of Jesus took place – how the eternal Word
in the now became an actual human being who lived and moved on the earth. A young woman named Mary was engaged to be married to a man from King David's family whose name was Joseph. But before they were married, and before they ever had any sexual relations, she discovered that she was pregnant. But her pregnancy was not a natural occurrence – she had been impregnated by the Holy Spirit.

19. Understandably, Joseph did not believe Mary's story about the supernatural pregnancy, but because he was a good man and did not want to publicly embarrass her, he decided to quietly call off the wedding and move on with his life.

20. But while he was thinking about the best way to break off the engagement, an angel from the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, Mary is telling you the truth; as hard as it may be for you to believe, she is still a virgin, even though she is definitely pregnant. She did not ask for this to happen, and she has not been unfaithful to you…she was chosen by God for this miracle. Go ahead and marry her, because the Holy Spirit did, in fact, impregnate her, and she is going to need your support through this.

21. “She will give birth to a boy, and you, Joseph, are to personally name Him as if He were your own Son; and you are to give Him the derivative of the name Joshua which is Jesus - the name that in Hebrew means Savior, or, literally ‘God saves.' This name will be prophetic for Him, for He will save His people (all the people who live on His earth) from their sins.”

22. All of this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

23. “Look for this to happen - a virgin will get pregnant and still maintain her virginity…and she will give birth to a Son; and they will call His name Immanuel which literally means in the Hebrew language ‘God is with us.'”

24. When Joseph awoke from this unusual and profound dream he did exactly what the angel of the Lord had commanded him to do, and took Mary home with him so that he could marry her.

25. But even after their private wedding ceremony they did not physically consummate the marriage until after she gave birth to the promised Son. And when the Son was finally born, Joseph named Him Jesus.

Hey bloggers,

I don't exactly know why I'm posting this picture. I'm not even really sure what I think it means...it just intrigues me for some reason, and I want to use it. There's a spiritual meaning in it somewhere...just trying to figure it out...

I started to use today's AYITN for the post, but I think I'll just refer to it here...it's about living in the NOW, and it's a good one. You can read it on the CITN blog...

Thanks for the good reports about last night's service and word...

Get a CD or DVD of it if you weren't there (or didn't stream)...I think the message was/is important...

Also, last night I announced that Debye and I have decided not to go to Brazil...

They really want us to go...and I REALLY want to go...but we don't feel peace about both of us missing a Sunday right now...especially a first Sunday...

The E.A.C.H. program is still in its infancy, and we believe that we both need to be here as much as possible to watch over it and nurture it...

Thanks, Robert T. for going outside last night and taking the picture of the nativity scene...I tried to make it fit on the BLOGINTHENOW banner, but I can't seem to get it to the right size...

There are 20 additional songs on the Christmas playlist...

I hope more of you will participate on the blog today...I think my post about taming the tongue just shut everyone up yesterday...

And remember today that you prosper as your soul prospers...

That's all I got right now...

May be back later...

Peace.

The Wisdom of James

Many teachers become not, my brethren, having known that greater judgment we shall receive, for we all make many stumbles; if any one in word doth not stumble, this one [is] a perfect man, able to bridle also the whole body;

lo, the bits we put into the mouths of the horses for their obeying us, and their whole body we turn about; lo, also the ships, being so great, and by fierce winds being driven, are led about by a very small helm, whithersoever the impulse of the helmsman doth counsel, so also the tongue is a little member, and doth boast greatly; lo, a little fire how much wood it doth kindle! and the tongue [is] a fire, the world of the unrighteousness, so the tongue is set in our members, which is spotting our whole body, and is setting on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by the gehenna.

For every nature, both of beasts and of fowls, both of creeping things and things of the sea, is subdued, and hath been subdued, by the human nature, and the tongue no one of men is able to subdue, [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, with it we do bless the God and Father, and with it we do curse the men made according to the similitude of God; out of the same mouth doth come forth blessing and cursing; it doth not need, my brethren, these things so to happen; doth the fountain out of the same opening pour forth the sweet and the bitter? is a fig-tree able, my brethren, olives to make? or a vine figs? so no fountain salt and sweet water [is able] to make.

Who [is] wise and intelligent among you? let him shew out of the good behaviour his works in meekness of wisdom, and if bitter zeal ye have, and rivalry in your heart, glory not, nor lie against the truth; this wisdom is not descending from above, but earthly, physical, demon-like, for where zeal and rivalry [are], there is insurrection and every evil matter; and the wisdom from above, first, indeed, is pure, then peaceable, gentle, easily entreated, full of kindness and good fruits, uncontentious, and unhypocritical: -- and the fruit of the righteousness in peace is sown to those making peace.

Brain Washed!

Hey bloggers,

Today's entry (11/17) for A Year In The Now is entitled BRAIN-WASHED, and it's one of my favorites.

Now, to "brain-wash" someone, according to the dictionary, is to subject that person to a process by which ideas are implanted in the mind. It is a means of indoctrination that goes on all the time, on mutltiple levels...through the media, the news, Madison Avenue, pop culture, and certianly throught religion...and it is generally and universally considered a negative term.

But I used it for today's devotional reading in the positive sense...in the sense that Jesus used when He said "Now are you clean through the word that I have spoken to you" (John 15:3), and in the sense in which Paul wrote the passage below to the Romans. As I talked about yesterday in my sermon, there are many things in our brains...in our minds...in our perceptions...that need to be "washed out" through the power of the truth.

I was planning on writing about this for today, and as I was putting this post together last night, the following comment appeared on the blog:

Bishop,

I am actually amazed at how the Holy Spirit is so moving and changing my life. I am noticing how He, through you, is renewing how I am looking at things that I so thought were set in stone, from the many years of believing what I had been taught. If it were that I felt I was being pushed to change my thinking, I would go into defense mode and harden my heart. The thing is I'm not being pushed or pulled, I'm being wooed by the Holy Spirit, and I am convinced that it is Him. I have done so many things in haste in my life, but with this I have decided to just let it happen. I've learned in my years, that if something is supposed to happen, it will. I know that right now I'm going through a peeling process, and in the end I will be oh so amazed with the results of His working in me. Just speaking right from my heart.

Thanks, Anonymous @ 8:32...

BRAIN-WASHED!

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life — your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for Him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
(Romans 12:1, 2 The Message)

Today I will live in the now! I will live in the now because I am being transformed by the renewing of my mind as it is being washed by the water of the Word! I am abandoning conformity to this world system and age, refusing to be fashioned and adapted to its external and superficial customs. My entire mind is being renewed for transformation—new ideals, new attitude. I am being transformed from VICTIM TO VICTOR because God is living big in me—bigger than my genetics—bigger than my family history—bigger than my dysfunctional circumstances. If God is for me, who can be against me!

Today I will be transformed from CAPTIVE TO CONQUEROR by the renewing of my mind! The Lord is turning my captivity as I exercise my authority and dominion in Him!

Today I will experience a transformation from TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH by the renewing of my mind! All things are working together for my good!

Today I will embrace a transformation from MEDIOCRITY TO MAGNIFICENCE by the renewing of my mind! God has called me to greatness and I have accepted the call!

Today I will discipline myself (my words, my attitude) for transformation from being a WHINER TO A WINNER! Life is in the power of my tongue!

Today I will be renewed and reinvigorated to be transformed from a state of EXHAUSTION TO EXHILARATION! My youth is being renewed like the eagle’s!

Today I will be transformed from a paradigm of REPRESSION TO a perspective of RIGHTEOUSNESS! His nature in me has set me free from the law of sin and death. I will walk in a new mindset today, and today I will live in the now!

Father, wash my mind with Your Word today. In Jesus’ name amen.
