Come Saturday Morning...

Hey, bloggers...SPRING IS HERE! And today is HOLY SATURDAY...the day before Easter...so HAPPY HOLY SATURDAY!...(I really don't mean to sound disrespectful, but it requires great effort on my part to not say Holy Saturday, Batman!) Forgive me, please. That's just wrong. Anyway, I was going to publish information about the traditional observances of Holy Saturday around the world, but I want to go in a different direction. Of course, we'll be talking about Resurrection Sunday tomorrow.

I loved all the responses about Good Friday yesterday (BTW, Debye pointed out to me that the picture I downloaded says "Goood" (three "o's") Friday...I hadn't even noticed it...I could make up a story about why it's spelled with three o's (three days in the grave?), but that would also just be wrong. It just came that way. But what I want to talk about is simply SATURDAY. Let me say that I truly honor the strong convictions of those who believe that Saturday is the true Sabbath...but, in all due respect, Christ is the Sabbath, and in Him, every day is holy! Therefore let no one sit in judgment on you in matters of food and drink, or with regard to a feast day or a New Moon or a Sabbath. Such [things] are only the shadow of things that are to come, and they have only a symbolic value. But the reality (the substance, the solid fact of what is foreshadowed, the body of it) belongs to Christ. (Colossians 2:16, 17 - AMP)

And don't write me to challenge me to a debate about that...if you believe that a day, either Saturday or Sunday, is the Sabbath, you're allowed. Namaste!

If you are somewhere around my age, you will relate to this...when I was a kid, Saturday was the most awesome, wonderful, sublime part of God's creation, as far as I was concerned. Monday through Friday was all about school and homework and bed-time, and Sunday in our house was about going to church all day long...Sunday School, Morning Worship, Choir practice, Youth Service, and Sunday Night "Evangelistic" Service.

But Saturday...ah, sweet Saturday...that was about no school, and staying in your pajamas and eating cereal while you watched (let me take a deep breath before I say it)...SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS!

Kids today have 24 hours of cable TV available to them with entire cartoon networks broadcasting nonstop, not to mention videos and DVDs and Xbox 360 and whatever else they have now, so they can't possibly understand how precious those few hours of cartoons on those three networks were every Saturday morning back in the day! I loved them all...the Warner Bros. stuff (Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies) and all the Hanna-Barbera collection (everything from Adam Ant to Scooby-Doo), and all the Syd and Marty Krofft productions, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and my personal favorite...the Banana Splits! Then, in the afternoon it was old Tarzan movies, and when I got a little older, Amercian Bandstand and Soooooooooooouuuuuuuuullllll Traaaaaaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnnnn were added to the line-up.

I know this doesn't sound spiritual enough for the day before Easter, but I was thinking about the kids in our church having their mega-Easter Egg Hunt today, and I grew nostalgic for the Saturdays of my childhood. Jesus said that only those who viewed the world as children could enter His Kingdom...and for me "Saturday" is a state of mind...a mindset that enables me to have child-like faith, to believe for the best in people, to be hopeful and optimistic, to believe in magic, and to believe that stories can and should have happy endings.

And on this day when we solemnly remember the still, quiet Saturday tomb of Jesus...when we observe Holy Saturday...I want to embrace that which is truly holy...the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead...the Spirit of Life Who writes the happy endings to all of our story-lines!

And just look around you. Spring is bursting out everywhere, and spring is about the promise of life conquering death...about possibilities...about life in living color. Tomorrow's going to be a beautiful day...Sunrise Service...a celebration of praise and worship...a full house...but today, I'm just glad it's Saturday!

Anyone remember this song by the Sandpipers?

Come Saturday morning
I'm goin' away with my friend (my friend)
We'll Saturday-spend till the end of the day...
Just I and my friend
We'll travel for miles in our Saturday smiles
And then we'll move on
But we will remember long after Saturday's gone
...

I'm huntin' wabbits.

Ah man, what a memory. I still go to websites and watch Bugs Bunny and Road Runner sometimes because I can't find them on TV anymore.

Thanks for the memories.

Man it's a great day in Pascagoula, M-I crooked letter crooked letter I humpback humpback I.

Happiness is walking outside to get my newspaper in my barfeet (sic) and seeing my son's F150 and my daughter's Jetta sitting in my front yard.

I are a blessed man! Thank you Lord! That's coming from a man who hasn't fully adjusted to the empty nest syndrome.

Good Morning Bishop,
I can totally relate to your Saturday experience, almost like we lived in the same house/life. Thank you for RESURRECTING a spark of youth that I had forgotten that fully CAME ALIVE on Saturday. I can feel that THIS AWAKENING of my inner youth will make this a better day all day. You can tell when something is going to be one of those “keepers” that just stay with you like the flavor of Captain Crunch cereal on Saturday morning; and this was a keeper.

I also would like to share a poem by an anonymous writer I read this morning in my quiet time.

The U in JesUs

Before U were thought of, or time had begun, God even stuck U in the name of God’s Son.

And each time U pray, you'll see; it's true. You can't spell out JesUs—and not include U.

You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name. For U, He was born; that's why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He lived.

It even takes U to spell United with God.

Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand that He rose from the dead, with U in His plan?

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew, and this word resUrrection is spelled with a U.

When JesUs left earth at His Upward ascension, He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.

"Go into the world and tell them it's true. That I love them all – Just like I love U."

So many great people are spelled with a U. Don't they have a right to know the love of JesUs through U?

God is one with U.

Touché. Hoist on my own petard. Is the day after called "Mon-day"? I love the well-placed sarcastic snappy answers to stupid questions. Perhaps, I should have asked if there was an official church designation for the Saturday before Easter. En garde, I will be on watch from this point forward. I actually thought the extra "o" was homage to "Goood Morning Vietnam". If you ever get a chance to the see the Dick Cavett interview with Groucho Marx on PBS, he has an interesting take on the name Peter O'Toole.

Man, o man, Saturday Morning in the seventies. School House Rock, Christopher Glenn with "In The News", Jonny Quest (why no h?) voiced by Tim Matheson, Hadji, Race, and Dr. Quest. Not really a Saturday cartoon, but the Rutl..er, uh Beatles animated series was always cool. I loved the song "Eight Days A Week". Saturday is as passé today as going outside and building a fort, damming a stream, playing army, or walking to the store. I don’t view it through Fleegle-colored glasses. It really has changed. I musta took a wrong toyn at Al-buh-koy-kee, doc. Who knows, maybe more is really less. Paul Winchell and Allan Melvin really carved out a nice little niche, didn’t they?

Everything was much more scarce in those days as it relates to TV. I remember the only televised ball game was the Saturday Game of the Week on NBC. Always, always, always, the Reds, Dodgers, or the Red Sox. Made a lot of us second division guys hate them, but that was all we had. Not sure if you share the memory of evening baseball with the windows open because of the oppressive heat on a slip covered couch that stuck to your back trying to find just the right place to perch the aluminum foil wrapped antenna AM radio to achieve the best reception possible. Praying to God there were no crackling and static-filled thunderstorms in the area that would compete with Mr. Cub trying to deliver his own thunderclap or that your station didn't frizz and waffle after sunset.

I miss it for a moment, then I realize how wonderful the now is. I wouldn’t go back, not for thing, no how. I know there is no place like home, but Oz is where I live now. Easter in Oz, how cool is that. I love that tomorrow is Easter, but I do have to admit that I miss watching my girl at the egg hunt. I would always keep a few extra and adroitly place them in her basket, just in case she didn’t get as much as everyone else. I never pulled a Joe Kennedy and tipped the balance if there was a contest. Tempted, but did not see it through.

Sahib, you have a way of dyeing my day into pastel thoughts. I will hunt for the cyber eggs for the balance of the day waiting for the cyber bunny to deliver my cyber basket.

Hope your Quest for the perfect Easter Service is In The News tomorrow. Gotta Split.

Ain’t God Good?

Alright Dennis, I'm not going to ride my motorcycle today. NOT!
Actually my sister is coming down from Alabama on hers and we're going riding together.
If its any consolation, a friend of mine had his head stuck in a halo for almost a year and he is riding again. He rode an electra-glide for a long time but now, believe it or not, he rides a Hyabusa. 200 mph man! What an idiot!
He's also a motorcycle cop. So don't throw in the towel yet.
But my father-in-law has a trike. But he's in his 70's for crying out loud.
I've already read your blog this morning also. Cool stuff!

LAWDY, y'all are CRAZY! Yep, I said the "y" word! Aaaaaaacccccckkkkkk! Somehow I've managed to escape the southern drawl over all these years, but I figure... it's Saturday, why not?

In my vew-w-y quiet contemplation, I suddenly remembered "cojunction junction, what's your function?" and "I'm just a bill... sittin' here on Capitol Hill."

And so funny that "Eight Days A Week" was mentioned. That was a B-side. And I was actually wondering just a few days ago what was the A-side song. Weird.

My Joe is puttering around on his Futura for a few hours this am. He and some friends will be riding up to Indianapolis in Sept. for the MotoGP race, and are plotting a fun ride back. Whatever... :)

Happy Saturday!

Hey, Dennis...Happy Birthday! Mine has been on Easter 2 or 3 times throughout my life. I turned 25 on Easter, and tomorrow my son-in-law is turning 25 (he is currently stationed in Honduras)

Thanks for sharing the memories, everyone. I have School House Rock on DVD, and it's really cool.

DBA...Jonny Quest...OMG, I loved that one, but I remember it coming on during the Thursday night prime time line-up. Back then, HB had several shows that were slotted in prime time (Flintstones, Jetsons, Top Cat). Did you know that the Banana Splits was supposed to be based on Hard Day's Night? I can't believe the stuff you know, and you're right about the NOW...

Donald, y'all be careful today (BTW, LP, I totally defend y'all as an acceptable contraction)...

How fun! When my youngest was little, she couldn't pronounce cartoons. The word morphed into "tatoonies".

So, we kept it, like these: Chocolate almond marshmallow ice-cream was too hard to say. Her shortened version was "chocadamano", Rice Krispies was "rykrippies", cash register became "cashister" and corned beef hash was "cornbecash".

Personal tatoony favs: Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Alvin & the Chipmunks (and dear ol' Dave), The Flintstones, Bullwinkle & Rocky, Yogi, Boo Boo & Ranger Smith, The Jetsons, "Queek-straw" Magraw & little Babalooey, Pink Panther (lol - sorry - flashback - just saw my dad on a morphine drip in ICU - he survived - no thanks to some of us who did Pink Panther imitations at his bedside. Staff invited us to leave.), Tom & Jerry, Roadrunner & Wiley Coyote.

Discussing Popeye & his crew always required an extra can of spinach. Was it Bluto or Brutus that had serious anger management issues?

Now that I think about it, why didn't it seem odd that this entire cast didn't fit in Sweet Haven?

A sailor, his anorexic-looking sweetheart, an orphaned boy named Sweetpea, who was dressed fashionably, (if you're, say, a sack of potatoes) a moocher w/serious integrity issues, as well as OCD for burgers.

And that's just the people! But, guaranteed - if it was on, I was probably glued to the TV.

Yes, I do remember that song; great stroll.

You're right. I think JQ came on Saturday once it became a rerun. Had no idea about the HDN angle on the Banana Splits (Tra, La, La). Still hum that for some reason. Already looking forward to Monday to see what the Easter post was. See what this blog has done to me, Sahib?

LP, I think, "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" was the other side of 8 Days A Week. Subject to correction. It seems like a lot of their 45 had songs that were not on the albums. I wonder why.

Peace to y'all (got it).

It's a beautiful day in my neighborhood too.
Ah...Saturday mornings. Trying to squeeze every minute from every hour so as to not miss a thing.
"Memories...press between the pages of my mind...Memories...sweeten through the ages just like wine"(Ahhh..I feel a song comin on).

Roaming the streets after curfew. Hiding from approaching cars hoping they weren't the police. Putting bottles in the road for all the teenage speeders leaving the Drive-in.
Watching the sunrise from the cover of briar laden bushes gleefully watching the city workers, police, and neighbors clean up the broken bottles.
Meeting up a our hide-out(which was usually the friends house who's Mom did'nt care what we did) to choose sides for War.
Weaponry: magnolia blooms(they looked like hand grenades), green pine cones, dirt clods or a reasonable facsimilie thereof.
Grabbing a frozen waffle, catching Scooby-Do and then off to war.
Escaping a trip to the ER, our gang would amble in the local grocery, clad in our usual outerwear...oversized fatigue jackets and P-coats, leaving with a booty fit for a pirate captain...BF Strawberry Hill, hot malt beverages,TN Sublimes, and yo-yos.
Ah, the smell of the pines behind the grammer school. The speedy ingestion of our loot. The spinning, the nausea. Calling "ralph" as we hugged a tree.
Saturdays...childhood...innocence.
"Those were the days my friend...we thought they'd never end..."

See how well I turned out.

Peace
PM

Hello ya'll--I don't know, for here I'm likin' y'ALL!

What great sublime memories! Fun. Fun. Fun. Youth resurrection--a reminder of the place in the heart to get back to Oz Now!

Donald: Happiness IS seeing the cars--AMEN! Didn't think we would but just found out that we will see cars in the yard this weekend too.

LP & Bishop: "Come Saturday Morning" - I don't know if its 1969memories or the excellence of the songwriter (maybe both) but it evokes bicycle with no hands freedom for me. Interesting that it was on the soundtrack for the Sterile Cuckoo. Which could bring up a great discussion of Corinthians 13 love.

I don't want to go there on this Holy Saturday day. I'm going to go ride my bike (no motor, dennis) with no hands.

Thanks,a trillion for the memory
of our"Saturday Morning".Where I grew up(Haiti)I cannot remember wherethere or not we own a T.V.But
we had each orther brothers and
sisters,cousins,to play with. It's
when we moved here to America,we started to wacht TV,and we learned about the saturday morning cartoon shows.Don't get me wrong,as
good as the cartoon shows are good
and silly to sit and wacht. But what I remember the most is my saturday morming playing with my siblings.
There are times I would give the world to have that back again.
Though most of us are here in georgia together it's not the same way it's used to be like when we were children.
Yes!there is something magical about that.Though, this coming weekend,we the(sister)are going away for mysister(widza,50th Birthday). Still,it will not be the same without the Brothers.
Because its only for the sisters.(Sorry Bish,we will not be there to help you celebrate your 50th that sunday). But I promise to keep
you on my prayers on this day.

I have this to say:IN the infinity
of life where I am,all is perfect,
whole, and complete. Each one of us,
myself included, experiences the richness and fullness of life in ways that are meaningful to us. I
now look at the past with love and choose to learn from my old experiences. There is no right or wrong, nor good or bad.The past is over and done. There is the NOW,and the experience of the NOW moment. I
love God, and I love Myself, for allowing GOD to bring into my heart
memories of the past into this present moment. I share what and who I am,for I know we are all one
in Spirit. All is well in my world
and I pray that all is well in your
world. Because,of our Lord Jehovah.

Behold,the Lord Jehovah
will come as a mighty one,
and His arm will rule for Him:
Behold,His reward is with Him,
and His recompense before Him.

JAW SUGAR?!?!? WHOAAAAAA, man... that's a new one on me!

Also, got to thinking about the wonderful candies of childhood. When very young and in Maryland, a gal from across the street would sometimes let me walk to the store with her, and I got the most wonderful candy lipstick and such. And of course, it's been established that I loved the thick, flat CHARM pops. Wish I could find them now. And every once in a blue moon, I can still get ahold of a Mallow Cup (I think that's more of a northern thing; I have trouble finding them.) YUM!

About jaw sugar. While referring to Barney, Andy Griffith has been known to say,"O-h-h-h,....he got him a little sugar on the jaw."

OK, several things…first of all, love having you share in the memories and getting it…

Donald, Dennis, Peacemaker, LP, Izumi…reading your responses makes me feel related to you…

All right, DBA, I finally listened to Double Back Alley and I get it…it is funny (“Neighbors were loud, but ever so pally”?)…that’s a hoot (with apologies to Penny Lane)

Avatar, I don’t know whatever happened to him, but Wendell Burton who played opposite Minelli in the Sterile Cuckoo was a Contemporary Christian artist in the seventies, and I used to have his album. I actually listened to it not long ago, but it seems to have disappeared from my collection.

Kettly, thanks for helping to keep us global…so many of us here obviously share childhood experiences…it’s important for us (me) to remember that the world is bigger than our personal memories…

Also, everyone, I got a Blackberry today, so I can get e-mails instantly, which means I don’t have to wait until I have my laptop to put your posts through, which means the blog can be much more accessible. Hopefully, now I can moderate even when we’re in Korea week after next.

Reading this post this morning helped me get my mind off the homegoing I had to attend this A.M., but it also reminded me that the tomb is just the portal we have to enter eternity through. I also loved the references to Saturday morning programming. For me, happiness was watching "Bugs and Daffy" (Is there ANY Network that shows Looney Tunes ANYWHERE?!!!) Then an hour of Saved by the Bell, or its many spin offs. (I'm showing my age there) Ah to be a kid again. Well, I'm off to eat dinner, have a few Dove Chocolate eggs, and beace myself for a hecka-cool Resurrection service.

Izumi/Joy: you ARE a joy! Had to sneak a few minutes yesterday from the kids visit to peep back and let you know!!

Missed posting this before “last call” on Sat.night, hopefully its not all too far in the past to post now, but I’m still wonderin’ on a few things here.

Donald: funny you reposted crooked letter/humpback. I was saying that as I drove in to the house tonight. I don't even live [and never HAVE] in MS. Once you learn it, it just kind of rolls off the tongue.

Kettly: what do kids in Haiti play on Saturday mornings?

Dennis: loved your US poem. Hopefully the L-Ls won't freak out but have you noticed that J-e-s-u-s just happens to be a blog administrator we all know's initials and "US". Just wonderin'.

Peacemaker: Bottles? Yikes. We did rocks and hoped they would shoot out. Night time hide and seek. Do kids even do that anymore? yo-yo's!! (pleasant sigh) Did you play with klackers? I think that's what they were called. [two colored plastic balls attached to cords, then we tried to keep them clacking back and forth]. As I recall they quickly went off the market--too many of them broke and seriously hurt younger brothers--fun while they lasted tho! I like your new pic.

Bishop: Wendell Burton was a Christian artist? That's interesting. I remember Liza'a character more, but W.B.'s as a "good" guy. Did they make the church look bad? I can't remember when that started happening in movies.

LP: I noticed. Enjoyed singing it that way a couple of times. (smile)

Night, all. I don't want to miss even a smidge of the SPECTACULAR services Kettly prophesied.
