MkITN VIII, Verses 27 - 32.a

27. Then Jesus went on with His disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way He said to them, "I want to ask you something...who do people say that I am?"

28. And without even having to think about how to answer Him they said, "Well, generally, people say that You're the reincarnation of John, the Baptizer...but others think and say that You're Elijah, appearing in the now...and still others just believe and declare that You're 'one of the seers.'"

29. Then He responded to them, "All right...so who do you yourselves say that I am? And, without missing a beat, Peter spontaneously replied to Him, "You are the Christ...the Anointed One!"

30. But He warned them to keep this revelation quiet...not to even breathe a word of it.

31. Then He went right into teaching and explaining to them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to experience an ordeal of suffering, to be tested and rejected by the elders, priests and other religious leaders...and to be ultimately put to death. He also revealed that after three days He would rise again.

32a. And He took His time in spelling all this out for them, speaking very plainly and explicitly, making sure that they fully grasped what He was actually saying...

So did Mark who had ears to hear so clearly take a nature break during the "you are the rock" discussion?
I'm enjoying the depth that's shown by comparing the synoptics in BITN...waiting for Lüke like I wait for Christmas morning...enjoying the anticipation...with no peaking!

This line realllllly takes me out there. He had the Spirit without measure. So, what's time mean to Jesus?

Did He expand the day? Or their ability to perceive fully?

Hey Bishop,
I gotta say, I am loving all the GITN (Gospels in the Now) and can't wait to read them all. Plus, they have been a welcome ditraction. I am visting a friend of mine whose father passed away earlier this week, and talking to him makes me so grateful to be a part of this house and to have you as my pastor. As he and I were talking he asked me where I thought his father was, because while his dad was a spiritual man, he wasn't religious my our definitions, and-as far as Chris knew- was never "born again" (I.E. never said a sinner's prayer). And I thought to myself that how before I had started going to church here, I would have told him, "Well Chris, if you don't know if he was "saved" or not then he's probably not in Heaven right now", and said it with complete and utter convition. Now, not only do I realize how insensitive that would've been to say (and heartbreaking to hear). I know that we all have different roads that we take, but the destination is the same. He told me how much of a nature lover he was, and I can't help but think it was because oft he fact that in Nature he found an understanding of God. So while I couldn't articulate it as well as you could Bishop, I told him that his dad's partial knowledge of God was made full when he went to the other side. And it made him feel better. And it's like you said, it is wonderful to be a part of the "especially them that believe" crowd (membership ALWAYS has privedges), but I am glad to serve the "savior of ALL men"

Thanks, Avatar...I never really realized how completely different the four gospels were/are until doing the paraphrasing...these men had totally different paradigms of Jesus, and different versions of every story concerning Him...

And BTW the depth of your writing Bishop is so engaging. I look forward to each new post to see what it pulls out of me.
Be blessed and know that you are appreciated.

Thank you, Bish.

And, now I'm wondering about v.32. Don't remember seeing "a" and "b", the first reading.

You know what I really like about v.33? (if you answer correctly, that'll weird me out)

I can almost imagine their conversation.

Was Jesus saying to His friend, "Amigo - you're way out of alignment. What happened? Did I lose you after the shush or the ellipsis?" (what's the plural of ellipsis? Ellipsisses? Ellipsi?)

There were some after the Lord's and Peter's comments.

On the surface, it seems like an open rebuke.

I never thought about (until just now), how Jesus might have been addressing the soul(mind, will & emotions/adversary/strong man) in Peter, charging, "Dude, get my back."

See?

In v. 29, Jesus asked, "who do you yourselves say"... . (please don't grit your teeth, and groan, Izumi - read it in context)

He probably meant all the disciples.

Just interesting that it was Peter who answered. And how he responded (v.32).

Jesus already described what would happen to Him. His disciples were closely aligned with Him. His life affected them significantly.

If He would suffer an ordeal, wouldn't they? If He would be tested and rejected by the clergy, might they?

Almost sounds like it by v.33.

Was Peter tormented by the sound of the rooster crowing? Did he despise the reminder?

Did he think he was speaking supportive words, unaware they were in opposition to God's plan?
